Dalaran in-game, prior to Wrath of the Lich King

Peter Lee's 2008 concept of the remnants of Dalaran bordering Alterac Mountains.

Dalaran Crater is an area in the Alterac Mountains located at the west end, on the shores of Lordamere Lake. It is north of the Lordamere Internment Camp and just east of Silverpine. It is a massive crater at the original location of the city of Dalaran, which was destroyed during the Third War. The region is still patrolled by Dalaran wizards and their rock elemental minions, who are leveled in their mid thirties. The NPCs around the crater are friendly to the Alliance and hostile to the Horde.

In Wrath of the Lich King

WotLK This section concerns content exclusive to Wrath of the Lich King.

Prior to World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King, Dalaran was represented by a large purple dome with ruined buildings set up around and protruding from it. Players could not physically walk through the barrier, though hunters' Eagle Eye and shamans' Far Sight could see inside (and even then, it was only plain ground inside the dome). Warlocks could also see inside if they summoned their Eye of Kilrogg while standing between one of the buildings and the dome.

Now that Dalaran has lifted off in order to fly over Northrend, the previous location of the city is dominated by this gaping crater, which is still surrounded by the dome (now nearly transparent), which once covered the locale. With some purplish haze around the site — possibly residue from the city's (literal) earth-shaking exit — it is an ethereal place. Members of the Kirin Tor remain at the old site to explain the move.[citation needed]

I've Fallen In and I Can't Get Up!

If you happen to accidentally fall into the crater, or wish to explore the bottom, there are three glowing "paths" - signs of the ley lines that ran under the city - that can guide you in and out safely.
